How to Make Your Own Canvas Prints

I love The Sound of Music. Hands down the best movie musical of all time. So, when I got a card from a colleague a few years ago with a picture of Maria in the opening scene, I knew that I wanted to save it and use it for something in the future.

Flash forward four years to the present  – I’ve been working on building a gallery wall in our hallway and really wanted to include this picture somehow. I ended up picking up a small canvas frame from the dollar store and used Mod Podge to stick the picture onto the canvas. This is such an easy project and you could use a variety of things to create your own custom canvas – cards, notes, photographs, craft paper or fabric…

The first thing I did was take some black acrylic paint and paint the surface and sides of the canvas (I used 3 coats). Acrylic paint dries quickly, so this project can be completed easily in a day or less.

After the paint is dry, apply a thin coat of Mod Podge (I use a matte finish) and stick on your photo or card. Let this set for about thirty minutes or so. I put a few canned goods on top of the card, just to make sure it didn’t bubble.

Apply another coat of MP over the entire picture and canvas. Do at least two coats like this, letting dry between each. When it dries it will look like this:

Here’s a little sneak peek of our gallery wall. It’s been a lot of fun creating it and I’m almost done… I just have one or two more spaces to fill.

Cereal Box Mail Organizers

We do not have a lot of space in our “office” which takes up a small part of our small kitchen. We have been using a stacked 3-tier mail sorter from Ikea, but it takes up precious counter space, so it’s been bugging me for a while. Then I saw this cool idea on Pinterest. Kim at Allons-y Kimberly used cereal boxes to make her own mail organization bins! We are big cereal eaters in this house, so I thought I could make this work. Prior to reading this post, I had actually paid a visit to Homesense and found a vertical mail organizer that I really liked, but when I got it home, I realized that it was too long. The space I wanted to put it was just too small. The only way that I was going to be able to use the wall space above our desk was if I had mail organization of some sort that could be hung in a row horizontally. This is when I decided to make my own version of the idea I pinned. For the boxes themselves, I pretty much followed Kimberly’s instructions to the t. I cut up my script paper and Mod Podged it to each box. I painted the inside of each box with black acrylic paint and then sealed that with a coat of Mod Podge. I bought Martha Stewart chalkboard labels at Staples and stuck them on the front of each box. To mount them on the wall, I used 3m adhesive picture mounts {they can hold approx. 10 lbs}. So far they have stayed put!

I love that they match my light switch plates!

Finders’ Keepers Friday: Clock Decor Art

Happy Friday everyone!

I’ve been a little remiss the last few weeks and haven’t posted anything on Friday… I guess I’ve been caught up trying to get everything ready for The Olde Farmhouse Vintage Market, which is now only a couple of weeks away!

I recently found these wooden pictures, with some very ugly looking dolls painted on them {argh…. I know I took pictures of these, but can’t find them anywhere on my computer!!}. I decided to sand them down and spray them in heirloom white.

I found these amazing french clock printables on Pinterest {see my DIY board if you would like to download them} and decided to print them up and Mod Podge them onto each piece. I added a little scroll stencil to the top of one and a Paris one on the other. I finished them off with some dark grey glaze to age them a bit. Of course, what’s a clock without hands? I found a package of 4 sets of clock hands at Michael’s and attached them.

I did toy with the idea of getting clock kits to make these “real” working clocks, but it would have been very expensive to buy 4, so I decided that these would have to be decorative clocks only!! These will be coming with me to the market at the end of the month.
