My first experience with homemade chalk paint last week with those little grey tables was so quick and easy that I’ve become obsessed! I had another little end table in the garage that’s been sitting there for a little while, so I decided to paint it in Benjamin Moore’s muslin.
Now, the original chalk paint recipe which I found here, says to use flat paint, BUT I had this left over eggshell latex paint given to me by my mother-in-law, who used it recently to paint her guest room, so I really wanted to use it. I mixed 2 cups paint with 2 tbsp of unsanded tile grout (white) and decided to put it to the test…. and when I say put it to the test, I really mean it because this table was covered in MANY layers of old varnish and parts of it were actually sticky to the touch… even my orbital sander wasn’t successful in removing any of it. I thought I should probably prime it first, but wanted to see if the chalk paint could really cover this on its own! So I went ahead, expecting quite a bit of bleed through, but NOTHING happened!!!!!! I was in shock and awe… wow! It turned out amazing after only two coats!
The eggshell paint was no different than the flat paint I used previously, once mixed with the tile grout. The finish came out flat. I lightly distressed and waxed the table and fell in love immediately.
What have your experiences with homemade chalk paint been like?
