Wow. I can’t believe it’s Monday already! This weekend was crazy busy… getting ready for my daughter’s 5th birthday on Tuesday, a trip to Bellingham and a visit to the zoo! The weather was beautiful yesterday – in the evening I managed to finish up these little garden pots that I’ve been working on.
I’m so pleased with how they turned out. These grey terracotta pots are from IKEA. I painted the outside with two coats of Oyster White Milk Paint that I picked up at Lee Valley. I’ve been wanting to try milk paint for a while now, and thought this would be a good first project… not too intimidating! It went on very nicely and dried quickly. I really like the colour of the Oyster White – it has quite a bit of grey in it, which gives it a soft look.
I don’t know about you, but often when I’m working on a project I often get inspired AFTER I’ve already started. This happens a lot… I start out with an idea in my head, but often once I start working, this idea may morph into something else, or I get a new idea and decide to head in a different direction. That happened with these pots. As I was painting the milk paint on over the grey, I pictured stencils painted over top of the white wash, in the same colour as the original (inside) pot colour (greyish taupe). Funny thing is I have that exact colour of acrylic paint left over from other projects – it’s Martha Stewart grey acrylic in a semi-gloss.
Because the stencil paint I used is an exact match to the original pot colour (total coincidence!) the effect is that these actually look like reverse stencils, with the original paint showing through. I used a variety of stencils I bought at Dollarama. I think my favourite is the birds on the branch.
I lightly coated the exterior with a satin polyacrylic to protect the paint. This was such an easy project with (I think) dramatic results. I’m thinking I might have to head back to IKEA for some more of these!!
