I recently saw this on Pinterest and had to check it out.I was amazed at the reproduction that Katie did of this vintage Pottery Barn print and immediately knew that I wanted to try this. She has a wonderful tutorial on her blog, Bower Power.
I printed up a copy and drew a grid on it.
Then I took my canvas that I bought at Michael’s and drew the same grid on that. Then I began sketching each square bit by bit. It was a little intimidating at first – I haven’t really done any sketching since high school! Anyway, I kept plodding along slowly and carefully until I had finished everything in pencil.
Then I took my silver metallic paint pen (I used medium and fine oil based sharpies) and started filling in the color. This was much easier than the sketching and went pretty quickly. I finished the whole thing in about 3.5 hours. I really like(d) it!!! I immediately hung it up in my living room….. BUT the next morning when I went in to admire it and flipped on the lights, I realized that where the picture is located in the room with the way the lights hit the metallic finish, made parts of Santa very hard to see!! I thought about moving it, but decided against that because this was the perfect place for this picture. It bothered me that I went to all that hard work and couldn’t really appreciate it unless I was standing in a certain part of the living room.
Sooooo, I decided to change the color to red… hoping I would like it just as much, if not more, than the silver.
Out comes the sharpies again…
The red covered the silver well, but I did need to touch up a few areas a second time.
Here it is now… without the reflective quality (except for the darn flash), Santa now has his rightful spot in our living room for the next month or so!!
I think he likes being back in his red suit…
Which do you prefer – the red or silver?
Linking up to the parties on my Linky page as well as WOW.
